Utah Arts Festival: Art Attack 5K Fun Run tomorrow
0 Comments Published by les June 27th, 2008 in Uncategorized.Editor’s Note: Day 6 of The Selective Echo coverage of the Utah Arts festival features details about tomorrow’s Art Attack 5K Fun Run and a feature about artist Jann Haworth, the artist in residence for this year’s festival. Tomorrow, look for features about the Wasatch IronPen Competition, Sunday’s performance of the MASS Ensemble and Earth Harp, and reviews of the world premiere musical commissions.
Runners and kids eager to test their summer fitness capabilities will want to take advantage of a USAT&F certified out-and-back course that is fast and flat throughout, not always readily available in Salt Lake City running events tomorrow morning. Now in its 15th year, the Annual Sports Medicine Center of Utah Art Attack 5K will be held taking participants from Library Square out to Liberty Park and back to festival grounds.
The event has become a solid way to raise funds for arts programs associated with the festival, according to Lisa Sewell, festival director who also happens to be an experienced marathon runner. The run, which includes a 1K component for kids 12 and under, raised $12,000 last year.
Given that the run starts at 8 a.m., festival planners are hoping to see hundreds take advantage of the relatively comfortable mild morning temperatures to participate. It’s not uncommon to see at least 700 participants and the good news is that same-day registration will open at 6 a.m. tomorrow. Participants for the 5K run can register for $30; those participating in the 1K course can register for $20.

Coming today:
After yesterday’s enthusiastic crowds, noticeably larger than what has been observed on the first day of previous festivals, today looks even more promising as all of the festival venues will offer a full day of entertainment, artists’ demonstrations, film screenings, workshops, and a full day of activities for kids in the Target Art Yard open until 9 p.m. Among the projects featured this year include printmaking techniques to make rock concert posters, creative assemblages of a forest of sounds, sculpturing sound waves from collage, string and paint, improvising a water jug drum circle, and an instrument petting zoo with Clive Romney. Participants will be able to play or sing on a recording and download a souvenir copy from the Utah Arts Festival’s web site.
